More Cake, Please!

We are clearly slightly cake-obsessed...maybe it has something to do with us working on cake vendors for our clients this week. Whatever the reason, we love a creative cake with yummy flavor and beautiful presentation. This one was definitely a show-stopper at our Meridian House wedding:

Cake with Flowers

We love us a pretty wedding cake, especially when it's adorned with fresh flowers. Check out this cake from a summer wedding at the Dumbarton House for one of the sweetest couples to date. And who doesn't love peonies??

Wedding Wednesday: All-White Wedding Cake Inspiration

As much as we love intricately patterned and brightly colored wedding cakes, sometimes less really is more! Though you might not have thought it was possible, all-white wedding cakes can be just as gorgeous.

These sleek and modern all-white cakes have a few key elements in common that keep them interesting. Though they are quite simple in design, the details are impeccably executed. They make a statement by allowing a single type of floral element to have the focus.

Tradition Thursday - Viennese Dessert Display

Dessert Bars have become extremely popular in the wedding world - just look at Amy Atlas' career! Couples are now spending time working with their designers to create beautiful displays to wow their guests (we have designed a few of these - please inquire if you're interested). This tradition has been around for much longer in the form of a Viennese Table - a dessert buffet full of different cakes, mousses, tarts, etc. The Viennese Table allows your guests to sample a variety of tasty sweets and is the perfect way to close out your reception. Check out some delicious looking assemblies below:

If you're looking for a customized dessert display for your wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, or birthday brunch please contact us at info@dbievents.com and we'd love to design something specifically for you :)

Wedding Wednesday: In A Few Words...

We've been seeing lots of wedding design lately inspired by bold, graphic fonts and lettering-focused details. Here's some ideas we've gathered for a "word-inspired" wedding.

Modern wedding invitations with a focus on font are a great way to tie in this design idea. Their design is simple and to-the-point, without a lot of decorative frills. But their focus on color and a variety of text styles still make them really fun to look at.

We love the simplicity of this all-white cake with its single pop of color! And the idea of the word "love" emerging from the chaos of the letters is just lovely.

What has more words than a newspaper! The old print adds a vintage touch, but it's a great contrast to the modern silhouette of these hanging decorations.

While this is clearly an interior design idea, the thought of stacked, monochromatic books as part of a table centerpiece sounds amazing, especially for a literature-loving couple. It's a great way to carry out the word-inspired design theme.

Another flower alternative we're loving is for the flower girl or ring bearer to carry a sign instead of flowers or a pillow.

These signs are great for taking fun photos.

Chalkboard menu signs and seating charts add a nice, personalized touch to the decor and are another great way to incorporate bold lettering.

Tradition Thursday: Wedding Cakes

Wedding cake has become one of the most important aspects of a wedding celebration. But where did the idea of serving these multi-tiered edible works of art begin?

Like many wedding traditions, it came from Ancient Rome, where the groom broke a loaf of barley or wheat bread over his bride's head, representing both his dominance over his new wife and good fortune for the future.

Guests would then gather crumbs, wishing for their own good luck. This eventually led to our modern-day rice and confetti throwing.

In Medieval England, the wedding couple kissed over a tower of sweet buns stacked as high as possible without knocking them over. The French croquembouche tower is said to have evolved from this tradition.

By the late 16oos, "Bride's Pye" was being served in England, a pie filled with a mix of oysters, pine kernels, rooster necks and lamb. Eventually this evolved into a pie of fruit, nuts and meat.

Each guest had to eat a slice or would be considered highly impolite. A ring was also hidden inside the pie and if a single woman found it, she was said to be the next to marry.

The development of a wedding cake most similar to today's form started in the 17th Century, with fruited cakes to symbolize fertility and good fortune.

The bride would eat a bite and throw the rest over her head, again symbolizing good fortune. Then the groom would toss a plate over his head, and if it broke, their future good luck was guaranteed. (Carol Wilson, Wedding Cake: A Slice Of History)

Even today, Kate and William's Royal Wedding cake was made up of multiple fruit cakes as well.

Wedding Wednesday: Art Inspiration

As an art-lover, I'm thrilled by the idea of art-inspired weddings. Here's some great ideas we came across for how to incorporate artistic elements into your wedding.

Art-Deco inspired invitations

Watercolor Save The Dates

Floral design inspired by 17th Century Dutch still life paintings has been popping up everywhere lately. Though its inspiration is centuries old, it's loose, organic, and natural and this makes it very modern.

Wedding gown designer Danielle Marie Berg created a line of art-inspired gowns. This gown, the Helen, was inspired by the drapey gowns worn by Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha's sirens.

We've also seen tons of art-inspired wedding cakes. The sculptural nature of cake design makes it a great item for incorporating your favorite art work.

Museums and galleries are great venues for art-lover weddings and DC boasts tons of beautiful spaces that can be rented for weddings and events, a great way to incorporate your favorite style of art into your wedding design.

A creative alternative to the traditional guest book we're seeing everywhere is to have guests participate in creating a work of art at the reception.
