Dessert Bars

At DBI we, as people of the sweets, believe in a delicious dessert display. Whether this supplements the cake, passed as a late snack, or simply highlights the family traditions, it's a great detail to add to any event. When designing this element, consider the following:

  • Ingredients: what would you like to include in this display? Pastries? Candy? Popcorn?
  • Serving Containers: based on your "ingredients" list, consider what would make the most sense in terms of platters, containers, and serving utensils.
  • To-Go Containers: instead of a favor, allow your guests to fill up on sweets for their ride home (or a late snack back at the hotel). Striped dessert bags and chinese takeout containers all are a great option.
  • Display Levels: creating focal points at different heights not only allows for a great visual, but also allows your guests to reach "ingredients" easier.
  • Signage: indicating what each item is not only adds another fun design element, but also allows guests with allergies to avoid items they cannot eat.
  • Composition: just like with any design, a balanced composition is key.
We designed a dessert display station back in September and here's what we came up with:

Today We're Talking Desserts

Welcome back! Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend - we here in the District finally got some sun without the crazy heat!!

Today we're talking dessert bars. We LOVE designing dessert bars - they are a perfect element for any party (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc). If you're serving dessert why not display it in an interesting fashion? Dessert bars allow you to not only showcase your caterer's or pastry chef's talent, but it also adds an interesting element to the soiree. Dessert bars can look really great or really.....not so great. We caught an episode of Top Chef Just Desserts on Bravo the other night and the episode was a great example of what to do and what not to do when designing a display. As you can see below - the team on the left created a cluttered look, which in turn completely hid the desserts. The team on the right got it perfectly - one focal point (rose chandelier) and a pink linen to make the white plates of dessert pop.

Here's another picture of the GOOD dessert bar:

And of the not-so-good one - you can see how the clutter takes your eyes away from the dessert. What a mess...

We work with some amazing bakeries so contact us if you're looking for a dessert bar design!

DIY Tuesday: Old Plate Cake Stands

We're working on a little DIY project this morning that's taking a bit longer than expected, so we'll share that with you next week.

But today, here's some really easy project ideas! Next time you do a little thrifting, pick up an old plate or two and some candlesticks to make a pretty DIY cake stand. You could even make several for a pretty dessert bar!

Here's a tutorial for these fancy stands that combine a candlestick, plate and drawer pull.

Here's a tutorial for these bright, more modern cake stands.

And here's a tutorial for these stands, which are made from plates and old goblets and glasses.

Tradition Thursday - Viennese Dessert Display

Dessert Bars have become extremely popular in the wedding world - just look at Amy Atlas' career! Couples are now spending time working with their designers to create beautiful displays to wow their guests (we have designed a few of these - please inquire if you're interested). This tradition has been around for much longer in the form of a Viennese Table - a dessert buffet full of different cakes, mousses, tarts, etc. The Viennese Table allows your guests to sample a variety of tasty sweets and is the perfect way to close out your reception. Check out some delicious looking assemblies below:

If you're looking for a customized dessert display for your wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, or birthday brunch please contact us at info@dbievents.com and we'd love to design something specifically for you :)
