DIY Tuesday: Hanging Accordion Paper Decorations

You've probably seen these accordion paper decorations all over the place lately. They've become quite popular for wedding and party decor and are a fun, simple DIY project for any event.

With the help of neighbors and friends, we made ton of them for my whimsical, vintage wedding in February, as pictured above. So today, we're teaching you how to make them!

Supplies Needed:
-4 Scrapbook Paper squares
-A piece of thin cardboard cut to 1" wide
-Bone Folder (used to score and fold paper; available at craft stores)
-Scissors
-Glue Stick
-String

Step 1:
Cut scrapbook paper into four 6 x 6" squares. We used four different papers, but you could make all four squares from the same paper.

Step 2:
Align the piece of cardboard with the left edge of one square that has been turned over so the back side is showing. Score the paper against the right edge of the cardboard with the bone folder. Fold the paper over the cardboard on the line you just created. Then do a final smooth down of the line with the bone folder.

Step 3:
Repeat this step for the whole sheet of paper. Then, repeat for each of the remaining three squares.

Step 4:
Fold each "accordioned" square in half. Go over this fold with the bone folder, If the open (not folded) edge doesn't match up completely, trim the edge so it's even. You'll now have four completely folded squares.

Step 5:
Each square will look like a V-shape. Glue the two inner sections of the "V" together. This will create a fan-shape. Repeat with the remaining three.

Step 6:
Glue the right edge of one fan to the left edge of another. This will create a half-circle. Repeat with the other two. Glue the two half-circles together. When compressed, this will look like four layered folds. When opened, it will look like a full circle with two edges that still need to be glued together. Glue these edges together. Add a string to the back with glue or tape and your hanging decoration is complete!

Friday Happy Hour - Happy 4th of July!

Hello readers - happy Friday! Who's excited for a 3 day weekend??

We have a wedding this weekend so it's no vacay for us BUT we will be grilling to celebrate Independence Day and want to share some patriotic ways to decorate your own grilling parties.

Red, white, and blue can get really cheesy really quickly. If you're looking for a way to bring in the color palette yet host a stylish party think about breaking up the colors. Do somewhat of a monochromatic look. For example, do a white linen, blue containers, and red flowers. Your table now looks patriotic but still has some chicness. We put together a few small arrangements using glass blue containers and red zinnias. The result is not only perfect for a garden soiree but it also celebrates our country!

And remember that grilling and having a backyard party is usually a casual affair so keep the floral arrangements natural, loose, and fun! Enjoy family, friends, the weather, and celebrating our Independence!

Friday Happy Hour

The week is coming to an end and fingers crossed it'll be a beautiful weekend in the district. Today we'd like to leave you with a whimsical image of a vintage wedding (not "vintage" as in what's cool today but as in ACTUAL vintage). The top hat, the insane veil, and the bride's glove - oh love...

Enjoy the weekend everyone! <3 DBI (we are apparently in a fantastic mood!)

"Flower" Dusting

To close out our week of "flower" entertaining we are talking about decorating your fiesta - the finishing touches for any host.

Now that you've incorporated flowers into your food, drink, and serving dishes it's time to focus on decorating. It's summer time so everything is in bloom and ready to be placed on your table.

A "green" way to decorate is to use your potted plants as table decor. It creates a rustic yet chic look and the best part is that you can reuse the plants.

Place flower heads on cheesboards, place cards, dessert bards, and appetizer plates. Simple mums are colorful and budget friendly and their hearty heads are perfect for sprinkling around. They can last a long time without water.

Your Daily "Flower" Serving

Continuing with flower entertaining:

Part of hosting any "food" related event is figuring out creative ways of serving it. Flowers are a great way to serve some popular dishes.

A great flower to serve mousses and other small desserts is in a tulip head. Tulips are perfect "cups" and their bright color single-handedly decorates your outdoor event.

Royal Wedding Flowers

This is an interesting video talking about the floral preparations for the royal wedding.

The floral displays in Westminster Abbey feature a variety of seasonal growing and cut British flowers and trees sourced from Royal Estates and other growers around the country. The flowers and plants include blossoms, azaleas, rhododendron, euphorbias, beech, wisteria and lilac. Nothing was imported!

The designer, Shane Connolly, was personally chosen by the couple and I think he did a fantastic job.

Tea Sets - Setting the Mood

Continuing with our theme of elegance and class today we'll be covering tea sets.

Since childhood I've been obsessed with tea sets. Every dinner, house party, or conversation took place around tea. Although not everyday was appropriate for the "nice" tea set, when that tea set did come out I would get excited (what a nerd! I know). And everywhere I went I'd check out the goods - from the red and white polka dot tea sets to the traditional Russian net tea sets. So needless to say I'm a huge believer in everyone having a fabulous tea set - whether expensive or not - it's a great way to express yourself and it makes a great decor accessory.

So why not add it to your registry (wedding or birthday)? Here are some of our favorite brands - these will cost you an arm and a leg but a girl can dream right??

The first tea sets come from Gien (France). Whether your style is classic, modern, or shabby chic you can find something you like here.

For insane luxury check out Haviland (France). Their pieces are over the top and I can't help but love them. For a full collection check click here.

For the ultimate girly tea set collection check out Deshoulieres. They have an extensive catalogue and have something appropriate for every style. Click here to check out the catalogue.

And the last, but DEFINITELY not least, is my all time favorite - Russian Cobalt Net Tea Set. While my grandmother is surprised at my obsession with the everyday russian tea set I dream of the day that I will own one. Its beauty and elegance is timeless and in my opinion perfect for any home decor. I love love love it! Click here and here to check out some more.

Whether you're looking for a new tea set for your home or are looking to throw a tea party (bridal shower, baby shower, a simple girls' brunch) a beautiful tea set will elevate your soiree!

Brooches - Classic Elegance

Yesterday we covered tie pins - today we're talking brooches! For quiet some time these beautiful and unique jewelry pieces have had a bad rep - labeled as "grandma's stuff", outdated, and cheesy. However, this piece of jewelry is great because you can wear it in so many different ways - clipping it in your hair (please use bobby pins! Don't directly attach it to your skull...thanks), adding it to your blazer, or add it to your summer fedora. This little piece can customize your everyday look - just think outside the box!

Although I've seen this accessory starting to make headway in the mass market - the best place to get brooches is still the thrift store or a vintage store. Pieces from the early 1900s are like nothing on the market today - the detailing is unbeatable!

Here are some beautiful brooches:

The best part is they come in all types of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles.

This accessory is also great for adding to wedding bouquets - a great way to incorporate some special family history to your ceremony.

Dressing Up - Cuff Links

This week we'll cover some great accessories (for both men and women) that elevate your style (wedding day or everyday). While Mad Men has had a significant influence on wedding decor it has also transformed the fashion culture - especially male fashion. Men are now focusing on sophistication - from tailored suits to pocket squares - and dressing for success.

A great way to personalize any dude's style is through cuff links. This "old school" accessory is making a huge comeback and because of this, jewelry and fashion designers are spending a little extra time coming up with beautiful designs. One UK jewelry designer, Kiki McDonough, is creating some of our favorite cuff links and we'd like to share:

These amazing cuff links make a perfect gift for HIM. They can also serve as another way to emphasize your wedding color palette. Using green as your accent color? Why not get your fiance green-accented cuff links? A sophisticated gift that will last him a lifetime (and always remind him of the big day!).

Tomorrow we'll be covering TiePins!
