Tradition Thursday: Heirloom Wedding Gowns

Little girls often dream of wearing their mother or grandmother's wedding dress someday, only to realize once they're actually engaged that the dress isn't quite what they'd imagined, whether it's completely out of style or just damaged from time.

Here's a collection of brides who pulled off wearing the family dress with style! They weren't afraid to customize the dress to their taste, but honored their relative's dress by making it part of their wedding day. Maybe these will inspire you to reconsider mom's poofy sleeved, 1970s dress...

This bride wore a dress worn previously by both her mother and aunt. She changed up the sleeves and also included lace from her grandmother's dress.

This bride transformed her mother's 1980s wedding dress into a modern, tea length dress. She removed the neck and reversed the dress so the buttons on the back would instead be on the front, created a more slim silhouette and changed up the sleeves. The result was a one-of-a kind dress!

And though most of this bride's dress was new, she had the single strap created from lace from her mother's dress, a subtle reminder of her mom's gown.

Wedding Wednesday: Art Inspiration

As an art-lover, I'm thrilled by the idea of art-inspired weddings. Here's some great ideas we came across for how to incorporate artistic elements into your wedding.

Art-Deco inspired invitations

Watercolor Save The Dates

Floral design inspired by 17th Century Dutch still life paintings has been popping up everywhere lately. Though its inspiration is centuries old, it's loose, organic, and natural and this makes it very modern.

Jan Davidz de Heem, Vase of Flowers

Wedding gown designer Danielle Marie Berg created a line of art-inspired gowns. This gown, the Helen, was inspired by the drapey gowns worn by Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha's sirens.

We've also seen tons of art-inspired wedding cakes. The sculptural nature of cake design makes it a great item for incorporating your favorite art work.

Museums and galleries are great venues for art-lover weddings and DC boasts tons of beautiful spaces that can be rented for weddings and events, a great way to incorporate your favorite style of art into your wedding design.

A creative alternative to the traditional guest book we're seeing everywhere is to have guests participate in creating a work of art at the reception.

Brooches - Classic Elegance

Yesterday we covered tie pins - today we're talking brooches! For quiet some time these beautiful and unique jewelry pieces have had a bad rep - labeled as "grandma's stuff", outdated, and cheesy. However, this piece of jewelry is great because you can wear it in so many different ways - clipping it in your hair (please use bobby pins! Don't directly attach it to your skull...thanks), adding it to your blazer, or add it to your summer fedora. This little piece can customize your everyday look - just think outside the box!

Although I've seen this accessory starting to make headway in the mass market - the best place to get brooches is still the thrift store or a vintage store. Pieces from the early 1900s are like nothing on the market today - the detailing is unbeatable!

Here are some beautiful brooches:

The best part is they come in all types of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles.

This accessory is also great for adding to wedding bouquets - a great way to incorporate some special family history to your ceremony.

Dressing Up - Cuff Links

This week we'll cover some great accessories (for both men and women) that elevate your style (wedding day or everyday). While Mad Men has had a significant influence on wedding decor it has also transformed the fashion culture - especially male fashion. Men are now focusing on sophistication - from tailored suits to pocket squares - and dressing for success.

A great way to personalize any dude's style is through cuff links. This "old school" accessory is making a huge comeback and because of this, jewelry and fashion designers are spending a little extra time coming up with beautiful designs. One UK jewelry designer, Kiki McDonough, is creating some of our favorite cuff links and we'd like to share:

These amazing cuff links make a perfect gift for HIM. They can also serve as another way to emphasize your wedding color palette. Using green as your accent color? Why not get your fiance green-accented cuff links? A sophisticated gift that will last him a lifetime (and always remind him of the big day!).

Tomorrow we'll be covering TiePins!

Ranunculus and A Rooftop Shoot

Hello Monday and welcome back everyone. As this is the season of ranunculus and bright spring colors we decided to put together a ranunculus/brunia bouquet for a recent photoshoot at the Rockville Rooftop. We'll be putting up more shots from that day at a later date. Enjoy!

Fall Trend Alert!

In the past few weeks we have met with several fall brides and these uber stylish brides are all heading for a "progressive" color palette. Forget the reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall. Modern brides are taking color inspirations from their daily fall fashion and applying them to their wedding decor. Big trend to watch out for? Blush, fig, suit blue, espresso brown, and mustard yellow.

Super chic. Super clean. Super modern with a soft touch. Loving. It.

Mad Men Wedding Inspiration

Mad Men's huge success not only keeps us glued to the tv but also has become a popular wedding trend. The retro look has come through in hair dos, wedding dresses, invites, tablescapes, and color schemes.
Not creative? Lacking retro ideas? Find a retro-print fabric and design everything around that (just like Cakegirls did for their cake below!).

Check out some fun inspirations below!

Choosing time-appropriate elements is a great way to bring in that vintage/retro design. Whether a typewriter, tin cans used for floral arrangements, lampshades, old rusty keys or glassware you can dress up your cocktail hour, reception, etc. For more inspiration click here.

This fun invitation screams retro! The green tones and the geometrical flowers are very timeperiod appropriate! Check them out here.

Forego the limo - exiting in a classic car will not only be super cool but also provide timeless photos!

Nothing says retro more than a birdcage veil! Customize and Accessorize!

A short dress with a wide skirt and a retro updo is any retro bride's dream!

This cake was designed by Cakegirls - they were inspired by a retro poppy print fabric! The colors and the flowers are super retro.

This will always be one of our most favorite design styles - retro weddings will never go out of style!
